Position Purpose
To collaborate with and independently support faculty with all stages of qualitative and/or quantitative research and in support of pedagogy in the social sciences. Research responsibilities may include (i) programming to construct and validate data, undertake analyses, and estimate quantitative models; (ii) collecting and analyzing archival or ethnographic information, and (iii) communication of qualitative and/or quantitative research in writing, including internal write-ups as well as assistance drafting and editing papers for publication. Pedagogical responsibilities may include serving as a teaching assistant for one course per term.

Description
Data Collection, Wrangling, and Analysis
  • Collect data via archival research, oral histories, interviews, review of primary source literature, and/or design and implementation of surveys.
  • Write data scripts to read in, clean, and analyze datasets including large and sometimes raw or unstructured files.
  • Assemble, organize, and clean data in preparation for analysis.
  • Undertake analysis, trial-and-error, and cross-validation to ensure consistency and quality in data construction.

  • Prepare appropriate and understandable representations of data such as graphs, charts, tables, and summary statistics.

  • Undertake descriptive and inferential data analyses.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and propose potential solutions to problems that arise in the process of data analysis.

Communication of Research
  • Conduct literature reviews and background research for grant proposals and academic papers.
  • Summarize data analyses in writing for grant proposals and academic papers.
  • Generate detailed documentation and open-access code that other researchers can use to replicate, update, and extend data construction and analysis.
  • Assist with drafting and editing papers for publication.

  • Assist with management of research team, including mentorship of undergraduate students.
  • Track and report on project tasks and progress.
  • Coordinate and provide feedback to undergraduate research assistants.

  • Preparation of classroom materials.
  • Participation in the presentation and review of curriculum.
